When do you usually fill up your gas tank?

While some motorists refuel when they're near empty, others swear by the half tank rule. These drivers fill up whenever they have half a tank of gas left to minimize the risk of running out of fuel in an emergency. As you can imagine, running out of gas can be an annoyance and potential safety concern depending on where it happens. The driver who follows the half tank rule doesn't need to be as worried about their car's remaining fuel level when the unexpected happens.

Depending on where you live and how much you travel, you might not think it's probable that your vehicle will run out of gas. However, some situations happen easier than you may think. For example, if you travel anywhere prone to hurricanes during their season, you might find yourself getting turned around at closed roads. If there's a gas station nearby, it's likely you and everyone else in the area will use it. If that station runs out of fuel, do you know where to go next?

Another example is March of 2021. Folks on the East Coast suddenly found themselves dealing with gasoline shortages. Panic buying ensured and made gasoline scarce, resulting in long lines at the stations. No one expects something like this to happen, but it can. In rural areas where there's only one gas station around for many miles, it can also be tough if the station suddenly becomes low on fuel or the pumps are out of service and you were depending on that one stop for the miles ahead.
